What Is Face Taping + Tutorial - Gurl Gone Green (2025)

Face taping is so quick to apply and the results speak for themselves!

Have you looked in the mirror recently and noticed the hands of time? Instead of saying well, #thisis40, there are natural treatments and remedies to help us age gracefully. Fine lines and wrinkles are among the first signs to betray our age, but one of the ways we can maintain a more youthful appearance is through face taping. Face taping has received a lot of hype on social media so in this post, I’m going to share how I use face taping, best practices, and what it has done for my face.

What Is Face Taping

Face taping involves applying adhesive tape to the face—typically overnight or before makeup—in an effort to lift the skin, minimize the appearance of wrinkles, or train facial muscles to maintain a specific position. Sounds pretty great, doesn’t it?

Makeup artists have long used the trick of strong tape to create a more youthful appearance for their subjects. This form of face taping is called ‘instant lifting taping’ and as the name implies provides an instant lift to the face and can be hidden by a wig or applied behind the ears.

The method of face taping I use is overnight taping.

The goal of overnight taping is to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles over time by limiting facial movements during the night. There’s nothing like waking up and not only feeling refreshed, but looking refreshed as well!

While face taping isn’t a long term solution, it’s also non-invasive and can provide an immediate, albeit temporary fix, for fine lines and wrinkles. Injectables such as Botox, may work better on deeper wrinkles and last longer, but there’s also a risk of side effects.

  • Frownies – Popular paper-based pre cut facial patches are designed to smooth wrinkles while you sleep.
  • SiO Beauty Patches – Medical-grade silicone patches that hydrate while smoothing out fine lines.
  • Face lift tape (non-stretch) – Gentle adhesive tapes created to address wrinkle-prone areas like the forehead, eyes, and mouth.
  • Kinesiology Tape (Face-specific) – Kinesiology tape can be cut into face appropriate shapes and used overnight to prevent wrinkles from forming.

How Does Face Taping Work: Anti-Wrinkle Taping vs Instant Lifting Taping

1. Anti-Wrinkle Taping

The goal is similar to Botox – to relax facial muscles and reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive motion.

How It Works:

  • Tape is applied to wrinkle-prone areas—like the forehead, around the eyes, or mouth.
  • It limits facial muscle movement during sleep.
  • This is in an effort to help prevent facial expressions that deepen fine lines over time.
  • Some tape such as silicone patches also hydrate and smooth the skin underneath.

2. Instant Lifting Taping

To create a temporary facelift effect for a more youthful appearance—mainly used by makeup artists for red carpet events, photo shoots, theatrical performances, and the like.

How It Works:

  • Elastic or strong adhesive tape is used to pull and hold the layer of skin in desired position.
  • Usually concealed by being placed behind the ears, under wigs, or hair.
  • Lifts sagging skin and can tighten jaw lines and lift cheek bones.

My Favorite Face Tape

I love using Radiance Rebel’s Face Tape! She offers three different varieties depending on your skin. They are all made with Japanese Cotton. Use code: GGG for 10% off. She has a guide that walks you through how to face tape.

Beginner- This is best for someone just starting off and who also has sensitive skin or mature skin. It can also be used for thin skin.

Intermediate- This is great for all skin types and has a 98/2 cotton ratio.

Advanced- Only Suitable for strong skin, has a 40% stretch. Only suitable for strong skin, has a strong adhesive.

How To Do Face Taping

Step 1 – Prep Face

Start with a clean, dry face. Avoid heavy moisturizers or oils.

Step 2 – Adjust Adhesive Strength

Press and release the tape on the back of your hand to reduce its stickiness. This helps prevent irritation, especially for sensitive skin.

Step 3 – Apply Face Tape

Press pre cut pieces of tape into the areas of the face you are trying to target – forehead, eyes, mouth. If you’re not using pre cut tape for specific parts of the face, then you’ll want to cut the tape into specific shapes that match the areas of your face you’re targeting. My favorite face tape is from Radiance Rebel. I started with the beginner tape but now I use the advanced. Save 10% off using code: GGG. Shop here. I also purchased her guide that walks you through how to face tape if you need guidance.

Forehead: horizontal strips

Smile lines/Eyes: curved strips

Jawline/Cheeks: lifting shapes

Step 4 – Wear for 2-10 Hours

Remove slowly and in the direction of hair growth to avoid tugging on the skin.

The biggest difference I have seen long term using face tape is in my forehead lines, which makes sense because that is the only place I’ve used it. It’s the only place currently that really bothers me as far as my fine lines. I should probably use it around my expression lines but I haven’t yet. Since using the face tape, my fine lines are a lot more subtle. I also love peeling off the face tape in the morning and seeing how smooth my forehead is. I face tape almost every night. Usually taking off one or two nights a week. It’s not hard to face tape, so I feel like adding this into your skincare routine isn’t a big ask compared to other aging gracefully modalities.
